A passion for community development first led Emily Nylen, BA’23, to º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ and today she is helping address one of Fredericton's most pressing challenges: affordable housing.  

 

After completing her MSc in Human Rights at University College Dublin, Nylen returned to Canada to begin her role as an Affordable Housing Development Coordinator with the City of Fredericton. In this role, she works with government and community partners to help advance affordable housing projects throughout the city.  

 

"My favourite thing about my job is that I get to be a champion for housing issues and lead advocacy discussions," she said.  

 

"Every day, I am inspired by the incredibly compassionate people I meet doing important work in this sector. There is a significant need for more affordable housing in the city, so I know my work has purpose."  

 

Developing Skills and Confidence at º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½  

 

"º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½'s commitment to social justice is part of what led me to campus back in 2019," said Nylen, who graduated with majors in Human Rights and Sustainability and Environmental Studies.  
 

During her time as a º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½dent, Nylen developed the knowledge, skills, and confidence she uses in her career today through coursework, experiential learning opportunities, and the Moot Court program.  

 

"Participating in the Moot Court program taught me how to deliver information in an organized and compelling way and gave me the confidence to draw on my expertise and answer questions while under pressure."  

 

She credits her professors with helping shape both her professional skills and personal growth.  

 

"I owe a great deal to my professors at º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ who helped shape me into the person I am today," she said.  

 

Some of her favourite memories from º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ are the friendships she built along the way.  

 

In 2022, she travelled to Florida to compete in the Stetson International Environmental Moot Court Competition alongside a classmate who became one of her closest friends. Years later, that teammate stood beside her as a bridesmaid when she married her husband—whom she also met at º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½.  

 

"I will always be thankful for the incredible community that º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ helped me find," she said.
